Not really Ernie Whitt. But I imagine him often sophistically engaging in informative MLB talk. Especially the Toronto Blue Jays. Follow on twitter @EWhittExchange. *I am not Ernie Whitt.*
Mark Buehrle SP
Current record: 1-1
Another new lineup for the third of this four game series in Tampa Bay. Right handed hitter Sierra will jump in at DH replacing Adam Lind because lefty Matt Moore is on the mound for the Rays. Don’t be surprised if you see Lind come into the game as a pinch hitter late in the game if the situation is warranted. Melky looked good in the leadoff spot yesterday with a couple hits in his first two at bats of the game. Lots of players were putting the bat on the ball and now today they’ll be trying to squeeze the ball through a few more holes and find a couple of gaps in the outfield.
Diaz came through in his first game as a Blue Jay yesterday with an RBI single for some insurance which proved to be a big run when the Rays threatened with a couple base runners in the bottom of the 9th. Who else is ready to see Janssen back to close things out? Santos got through the inning but it wasn’t pretty.
No doubt the key to the game again will be what proved successful yesterday. Buehrle has much of the same ability as Hutchison does; pick spots in the zone and mix it up to keep Tampa Bay hitters on their toes. He won’t overpower anyone but he’s smart. Rays batters saw a similar style yesterday though so Buehrle will have to be focussed and on his game to avoid getting hit hard. He started the season incredibly slow last year and then gradually got into a groove in mid-season so let’s hope he can settle in a little more quickly in 2014. Jumping out to an early lead again today will be key as Buehrle would benefit from pitching with a bit of a cushion to allow him to pick his spots in the zone.
Go Jays Go!
